Currently celebrating our 30th anniversary season, SAL has a long history of bringing the leading writers and thinkers of our times to the stage and to the classroom. Through our public and education programs, SAL serves more than 34,000 children, youth, and adults in the Puget Sound region annually.

Our public series - Literary Arts, Poetry, Women You Need to Know, Hinge, and SAL Presents - transcend boundaries such as race, gender, and socioeconomic status to reach audiences that reflect our region's rich diversity. This year our season includes authors and artists such as Ta-Nehisi Coates, Isabel Allende, Reza Aslan, and Viet Thanh Nguyen.

Our award-winning literary arts education program, Writers in the Schools (WITS), places accomplished local creative writers in yearlong classroom residencies at 27 public schools and Seattle Children's Hospital. WITS annually serves more than 6,500 K-12 students. We are especially committed to reaching student communities with the highest need for academic support and arts opportunities by prioritizing schools that serve a high percentage of students living in poverty. Classroom teachers and students tell us that WITS makes a difference: 91% of teachers say that because of WITS their students are stronger writers and 84% say that their students' overall self-confidence has increased. Among students, 85% say they have fun writing and 84% say they believe they can continue to get better at writing because of WITS.
