Concerned area residents established North Olympic Land Trust in 1990 to protect the natural resources and special qualities of the North Olympic Peninsula's unique land base. The organization's primary method of protecting local lands is by enabling private landowners to establish legal agreements called conservation easements. Land in high-risk fish and wildlife habitat areas, areas of high recreational value, and farms producing food and timber receive greatest priority. Landowners voluntarily donate development rights associated with their properties to the Land Trust, which then has an ongoing responsibility to make sure terms of the agreements are upheld in perpetuity. Owners can continue to use their land, sell it, and bequeath it to heirs.
